Side Note: People are confused by Real Estate Property Taxes & Personal Property Taxes. Real Estate Property taxes are for a property/home. Personal Property Taxes usually pertains to a business. It is based on assessed value of tangible items, for example, furniture and machinery.
How do I pay Property Taxes for the City of Portage?

How do I Search for Real Estate Tax Bills & Real Estate Tax Payment History?
You can locate and print tax bills and research real-time payment history from the Columbia County Tax Parcel Data Search online:
- Begin by following this link.
- Municipality: Choose “11271 - City of Portage”
- Enter one of the following:
- Parcel ID (Digits following 11271 - )
- The street number
- The street name
- Last name of the property owner.
- Click Find Now.
- Click on the link to the tax parcel you searched for.
- In the middle of the web page where it says Select Detail, click on the drop down menu to Select Detail and choose Taxes.
- You will be able to view previous tax payments in the Tax History Table. To view previous payments click on Tax Year in the Tax History Table. Payments are updated in real-time. This means the website will show a payment was received as soon as it is entered. To view a tax bill go to the middle of the webpage, above the Tax History Table, labeled Print Tax Bills and click on the year you would like to view.
Do I need to endorse the back of my escrow check?
If you are listed as the payee or co-payee on your escrow check, you must endorse the check. If more than one payee is listed, every payee listed must endorse the escrow check.
What do I do if my escrow check from my mortgage company is not enough or too much to cover the amount due?
If the check is not enough to pay the first installment, you are responsible to pay the difference by January 31. However, if it covers more than the first installment, you may pay the balance of the second installment by July 31. If the check is more than the total amount due, you will receive a refund.
How do I update my mailing address on my Property Taxes?
Follow the instructions about for "How Do I Search For Real Estate Tax Bills" listed above until you find the parcel (Step #5.) Locate the section with the Mailing Address and click on "Request Mailing Address Change." Then Click on "Start Request" and fill in the new mailing address information. Once all the information is entered click "Send Request." It will take a few days to update.
How do I know if my Property Tax Payment has been received or print a receipt?
Follow the instructions about for "How Do I Search For Real Estate Tax Bills" listed above through Step #6. The Tax History Table will show payments. If you would like to to print a receipt you can click on the Tax Year you would like to view and click "Printer Friendly" for the full receipt. The data on the website is updated in real-time. This means you will be able to view a receipt the moment the payment is entered.
