Wisconsin River Flood Update – April 16, 2026: 12:30PM

Columbia County Emergency Management Office shared that the National Weather Service is forecasting the Wisconsin River could reach a major flood stage of approximately 20.7 feet in the morning hours of Thursday, April 16. As of this update, the river level is 18.9 feet and rising. This remains a forecasted estimate and may change based on evolving conditions.
The City, in coordination with Columbia County and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, has established flood response procedures and is actively working to respond to rising water levels. As of this notice, the following streets within the City of Portage will be closed this afternoon due to rising water. A map is attached for reference.
- Summit street - River Street to Carroll street
- Carroll street - Summit Street to Prospect Avenue
- Conant street - Prospect Avenue to Sunset Street
- Prospect avenue - Carroll Street to 500' east
- Pleasant street - Conant Street to 500' east
Sand and sandbags are available to the public at two locations. Residents should bring a shovel and an appropriate vehicle or trailer for transport: Sand Shed at old Public Works Garage (616 Washington St, Portage) and the Columbia County Highway Shop (338 W Old Highway 16, Wyocena).
